EPI's weekly illustration of education data trends — July 15, 2014
With all the discussion about increasing college access and ensuring completion, it is interesting to note the future predictions from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) regarding occupation forecast and requisite education. As illustrated in the graphic below, the distribution of occupations by education will remain almost identical between the periods of 2012 and 2022. Of the 145 million jobs in 2012, 68 percent require less than a college degree or certificate, with only 18 percent requiring a bachelor's degree and 5 percent with a graduate or professional degree. In 2022, the number of jobs is expected to increase to 160 million, with essentially the same percentage distribution.
