US News & World Rankings of National Universities 2014

This morning, US News and World Report released their 2014 ranking of US institutions of higher education. Those of you looking for their alma mater, where you send your children, or something remotely interesting, please go divert your eyes. You won't find it here. The story is the same as it always is: the top universites are the most expensive and have the highest graduation rates. They are the most selective institutions in the country.

The top 19 institutions are all private, not-for-profit institutions with tuition and fee charges above $40,000/year. That's only tuition and fees. Add an another $12-15,000 for room, board, and ancillary fees at these institutions for a more accurate reflection of their costs. All eight Ivy League institutions* are in the top 20, and the first public institution is ranked at number 20 (UC Berkeley). Once all is settled, 47 of the top 100 insitutions are public but only 16 of the top 50.

So, enjoy. Money apparently matters more than anything else. Not sure where public policy aligns with that finding, and how long we continue to provide public subsidies to private institutions. Perhaps that's a realistic policy conversation to have in Washington.
