Of high school graduates who took the ACT examination in 2016, 62 percent met the ACT college readiness benchmark in English and 41 percent met the Mathematics benchmark. As the chart below clearly illustrates, there remains a large gap between Asian and White students with all other groups. For instance, in English, 73 percent of White students met the college readiness benchmark compared to 46 percent of Hispanic students and 33 percent of American Indians. In Mathematics, similar patterns exist. Half (50 percent) of White students met the mathematics compared to 27 percent of Hispanics and only 13 percent of African Americans.
